On June 30th and July 1st, 2016, Alissa Pelatan, the development director for ESELA was invited to speak at the first European B Corp Summer Summit held at the Church Palace Hotel in Rome. This Summit, organized by B Lab Europe and Nativa Lab, welcomed all European B Certified Corporations from Europe to reflect, learn and share on their experience. The Summit promoted the global movement of “People Using Business as a Force for Good”, and strengthened bonds between the B Corps and the service providers. The Summit was a perfect opportunity to share ESELA’s research on European Social Enterprise Law with the European B Corp network. The Summit started with an inspirational speech by Marcello Palazzi and Nathan Gilbert, and focused on three main themes: Celebration, Reflection, and Action. Over the two days of the Summit, we had the chance to exchange ideas with social businesses and international lawyers and attend seminars focusing on topics such as mission alignment, sustainable finance, supply chain management, leadership development and marketing. We also were able to speak to participants about mission-aligned businesses in Europe and the legal issues that may arise in European context. The Summit ended with a cocktail for local business leaders, government officials, non-profit organizations, media and members of the general public, to discuss the origin of B Corp and and the implementation of the “Societa Benefit” legislation in Italy. It was a truly inspirational conference.
