The First International Conference of B Lawyers was held in Lima, Peru between 19 and 20 of June 2017 on the campus of the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Lima (PUCP). The conference was aimed at growing the international community of lawyers who are supporting the B Corp movement.
The conference featured an impressive array of leading and expert lawyers from across the whole of Latin America, with a number of international speakers, such as Bill Clark, a partner at Drinker Biddle and Reath in the US, Julie Wynne, a partner at Froriep in Switzerland and David Davies and Luke Fletcher, partners at Bates Wells Braithwaite in the UK.
The conference heard from Senator Mauro del Barba, who sponsored the recent Italian benefit corporation law, and from a member of the Uraguyan parliament who is sponsoring a similar bill in Uraguay. What was striking was not only the passion and commitment of a whole generation of lawyers from across Latin America to this new way of doing business but of the wave of legislative initiatives across the continent – a silent corporate law revolution is slowly taking place and it seems that Latin America is soon to be leading the way!
The discussions ranged widely from the global socioeconomic and political context for B Corps, the challenge of lawyers’ new role in the new economies, international trade, B Corporations and public companies and the challenges of changing the way capital markets work.
